about

Pansy is a song about coming to terms with being a sensitive person. I know that I’m better off being more in touch with my feelings, but sometimes it feels like a curse. I describe this type of sadness as a “shade of blue”. Shades of blue can come from anywhere, a person, a situation, etc. The chorus for this song is calling me out for being so sensitive and for being so lazy when I’m sad. The song also tells the story of a relationship induced sadness fading overtime and how after going through those shades of blue, I didn’t see that person the same way. My favorite part of Pansy is the second verse (1:23-1:56). The layered harmonies create a great buildup to the chorus!

lyrics

Rose garden in your eyes
I don’t see it now
I don’t know what to do with my time
When I’m not always spending it on you
I know I’m better off cause I see in shades of blue
Pansy, that’s all you’ll ever be
Pansy, burning holes in your T.V. screen
Pansy, don’t you know what it means to me?
She runs through my veins
My primary I.V. shit goes straight to the brain
Well, I know I’m better off
I know I’m better off without it
Took months to understand
To finally wrap my head around it
These shades of blue
Pansy, that’s all you’ll ever be
Pansy, burning holes in your T.V. screen
Pansy, don’t you know what it means to me?
It doesn’t feel like it used to when I look at you
