about

I wrote the chorus for this song when I was eighteen and had just moved out of my parents’ house. I was so nervous about getting older and it seemed like growing up was “just around the corner”. To me, this period of my life represents anxiety and confusion. I wrote the verses for this song a few years later when I was 21. At this point in my life, I was less stressed about growing up and more stressed about love and romantic relationships. This led me to be a clingy and anxious partner which eventually resulted in pushing away the one(s) I loved most. I tried to win back a previous partner but was no longer the one she adored. This feeling of anxiety and confusion reminded me of when I was eighteen, which is why I think the song flows well together, despite some of the lyrics being written years apart. My favorite part of the song is the second verse (2:00-2:33), it’s so groovy!

lyrics

If feelings are fleeting
Then why is my heart so sure of herself?
Not in good health
Wish my room wasn’t in Idaho
Then maybe I could live in your backyard
Or is that too far?

Such sweet, sugar-coated dreams
Haunt me, I don’t wanna fall asleep
It’s just right around the corner
Right around the corner
Eighteen, so sweet
Eighteen baby

She’s my baby
But I don’t know if that makes sense anymore
Not the one you adore
Slow dancing in the kitchen
Maybe that will even the score
Or are we done for?

Such sweet, sugar-coated dreams
Haunt me, I don’t wanna fall asleep
It’s just right around the corner
Right around the corner
Eighteen, so sweet
Eighteen baby
